So, I am attempting to try and grow out my hair long, but in order to do that, I unfortunately must go through that awkward mullet stage before I get it long and flowing. So, while I was talking about mullets with my hairdresser, she told me that mullets were slowly making a comeback in the fashion world. Her logic went as follows:
P1: I give more of my customers mullets.
P2: The number of people with mullets is increasing
C: Mullets must be making a comeback in the fashion world.
I happen to find this argument weak because the conclusion does not put forward strong evidence that mullets are indeed a rising fashion trend. What do you think?
I would say your hairdresser's sample is too small to qualify her as a reliable source (she may be committing too hasty a generalization). However, if she talks with other hairdressers, perhaps she is in a position to spot a trend. Sad if true.
ReplyDeleteIf a large group of hairdressers did exactly as this one was doing that there's a possibility that they could together force a trend. However, it wouldn't be a fashion choice on the part of the customers.
ReplyDeletei agree with professor silliman and gus. her sample size is far too small and also location based. styles are going to differ greatly from here to west virgina for example. if there was some sort of poll taken from across the country that mullets where coming back into style or there was a fashion website or other source that made this claim then she may have a argument to make.
